Gettysburg and Petersburg Turnpike Company

The Gettysburg and Petersburg Turnpike Company was incorporated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the 1807 request of Adams County for "an artificial road from Gettysburg to the Maryland line".[1] The road was built to support the April 1807 Chambersburg-to-Baltimore stage line from Ralph Lashell's house in Gettysburg to sheriff Jacob Winrott's in Petersburg (now Littlestown).[1] Construction began after the October 1808 meetings on the 17th (at Winrott's) & 18th (Lashell's) "for the purpose of receiving Proposals in writing for making of said Road"[2] (the 2nd elections were in November).[3]
